Christus Victor - Liberation from Death

Philosophy & Religion

This photographic piece, "Christus Victor", was inspired by Swedish theologian Gustaf Aulen's groundbreaking book (published in 1931) of the same name.  In his book, Aulen identifies three Atonement theories: the Ransom theory, the Satisfaction theory, and the Moral Influence theory.  The view he supports suggests the motif of liberation, where the Christ supposedly liberates humanity from the bondage of death, sin, and the devil.  I first read the book in a Theology course I took at the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology.  The idea behind the piece is the Christ's descent into Hell, anticipating his liberation of Humanity and his subsequent resurrection.
