Hamas Must Further Modify Its Charter

Current Affairs

I am delighted that the UN has accorded statehood to the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. However, I am concerned about Hamas' Charter. It is all well and good that it removed from its Charter, statements seeking Israel's destruction, but the Charter is loaded with religious and militant language that targets Jews rather than the more specific Israel. Such language does not help to promote negotiating in good faith. The international community, in the same manner in which it holds Israel responsible (and rightly so) for it actions towards the Palestinians in the occupied territories, must put pressure on Hamas for the hostile language in its Charter and for its targeting of Israeli civilians in its rocket attacks.  I support the struggle to achieve self-determination, but I refuse to support any group or nation that chooses violence and aggression against civilians.
