VIOLENCE

In his article “Behind the Connecticut Massacre”
Jerry Kroth suggests that instead of focusing on mere particulars, such as the
need for greater gun control or for more effective “policing of individuals with
mental illnesses” in the wake of the recent slayings in Connecticut, the focus should
be on the broader problem of violence in our society. He provides examples and statistics that for
him indicate America ’s
overwhelming lead in possessing a culture of violence unrivaled in any other country in the rest of
the world and proposes solutions that aim at “cultivating a culture of peace.” That
President Obama, at his recent press conference, proposed far-reaching changes beyond
mere gun control, Kroth sees as positive in taking steps toward achieving this culture of
peace.
