"What Fool Gives Homework During Vacation?"

Well, this fool used to. Several years ago at my school, as teachers and students were preparing to go off on December vacation, one of my students asked another teacher, (BC, an incredibly gifted educator and a person whom I hold in the highest regard), if she were going to give them homework over the vacation. To which she responded, "Which fool gives homework during vacation?" Thankfully, the student was gracious and did not reply, "Ric does." That question has stayed with me ever since and has certainly influenced my approach to assigning homework. I no longer give students homework to be completed during a vacation. After all, it's vacation, a time to be relieved from the rigors of study and to relax, have fun, and enjoy the company of friends and family. Which reminds me...Schools are closed, and I am now on my Christmas vacation. So I think I will take a break from blogging about Education-related matters until I return to school on January 3, 2013. Hey, don't get on my case; I am on vacation!
Happy Holidays, everyone!
