What's In A Name?

Religion & Philosophy

What in the world was I thinking!!?? Well, I could not have known any better at the time, for I was only 14. Now those of you who are Catholics will know that part of receiving the sacrament of Confirmation involves choosing a name for yourself from the list of canonized saints, and that during Confirmation this name is imposed on you by the bishop administering the sacrament. My choice for a name was that of St. Andrew Avellino. Now what this venerable saint and I have in common are our love for the humanities, philosophy, and our good looks. Well, um...okay...I see those raised eyebrows, so let's scratch the last one. But where St. Andrew and I part company is on the so-called virtue of chastity. This virtue was that which he was well-known for. Now I cannot imagine that that was the reason for my choosing his name as my middle name. Somewhere along someone must have mislead me, or at the time I did not understand what 'chastity' meant. Had I known, I certainly would not have chosen his name, for there would be so much I would be missing out on. Thankfully, I have never really used Andrew as part of my name, which is well, for I do not think I could live up to the expectations.
