Coconut Water - that refreshing, cool, clear liquid found inside young coconuts, and now being discovered by Europeans and North Americans, resulting in a frenzied and profit hungry rush to create markets. They are discovering that which those who live or have lived in the tropics already know - that this delightful fruit of the coconut palm has good health benefits. It is low in fat, carbohydrates, and calories but rich in minerals and potassium. In South America, the Caribbean, Asia and other tropical regions you will find them on almost every street corner, along main roads, and in market places. Just one of those beauties is enough to fill you up and quench your thirst on a hot day. On any of my summer visits to the tropics, the first thing I must have upon my arrival is a coconut water. It nutty taste and flavor is indescribable. Well, almost everyone who tastes it will say it is heavenly. It is now becoming increasingly popular in the North and is being manufactured and marketed as an energy drink. Personally, I highly doubt whether these canned or boxed products are the real thing. I figure that there is a lot of water and other additives added and that what is sold is a very misrepresented version of the real thing. I have tasted the manufactured version, and I have to tell you it is nothing like the real thing.
