Since his decision to run for President, and especially these past few days, a variety of names have been used to describe Donald Trump. Everywhere one turns he is spoken of as the consummate imbecile. Well, the last time I checked he appears to be leading the GOP field in the national polls in his bid for the presidency of the United States of America. He has to be one smart "fool" to be able to have so many people buying in to his presentations as to why he should be elected. For a "nut-job", Mr. Trump certainly knows how to tap into the xenophobia, rabid patriotism, and insecurities of the many individuals who find his message appealing. For an "idiot", he certainly knows how to attract large crowds to his gatherings and to have them hang on to every word he says. The mistake that Mr. Trump's opponents appear to be making is that they are jumping on every apparent controversial statements he makes and are using terms that characterize him as moronic. They, in fact, are the ones who are coming across as moronic because of their use of ad hominem responses to his statements rather than putting forward arguments that attack the basic assumptions lying at the foundation of his message.
Additionally, public officials and leaders both here and abroad have castigated him for his recent statement in which he said that he would prohibit migration of Muslims to this country until a course of action to deal with terrorists threats could be found. The response from President Obama, Prime Minister Cameron, and many others was instant and scathing, with President Obama questioning Trump's worthiness for the presidency because of his statement. Their counter to Donald Trump's statement was that there were an exceeding number of Muslims who were peaceful and who did not endorse the ideology of terrorists who were professed to be Muslims. Fair enough and quite true, but as I watched leaders like President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron adumbrate about the number of peaceful Muslims far outnumbering those who embrace violence, I could not help but wonder at the inordinate number of those same peaceful and innocent Muslims their bombs indiscriminately killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Syria, and elsewhere. So while Donald Trump advocates for denying peaceful Muslims entry into the country, he not rain bombs upon them (at least not yet).
