Following terrorist attacks in some countries in Western Europe over the past two years, familiar landmarks in the West, Landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the Brandenburg Gate, and others have either dimmed their lights or have been illuminated with the color of the flags of the victim countries. Not so with the recent terrorist attack in St. Petersburg, Russia. Nothing. Nada. No flag. No superimposed white, blue, and red on FaceBook and Twitter profile photos. No gesture of sympathy towards Russia by the West. It's like cutting off their most to spite their face. My cover photo is the only social media response I have seen, and I am sure there are others, but the seeming absence of any acknowledgement of the tragedy is telling. Not even from my friends have I seen any response. But this post is not about the seeming lack of acknowledgement from my friends but the complete disregard shown by the West. It was only because of public outcry that the Eiffel Tower authorities in France have decided to dim the lights of the Eiffel Tower. Israel to its credit seems to have been the only country that has responded with a visible recognition of the tragedy, lighting up City Hall in Tel Aviv with the color of the Russian flag. Kudos to you, Israel. God be with you in this time of tragedy, Russia, and also with you to Pakistan and Iraq, for you also experienced horrendous terrorist attacks in your lands this past week.
